Mickey McNew was born and raised in Longview Texas. He grew up as an ordinary kid with good parents. He played sports throughout his young adult life taking a real interest in baseball. Due to early stages of rebellion and a knee injury, Mickey quit sports. After high school, he went to a technical college and landed an eight year sentence in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. It was there he started his journey with God. Although he had attended church with neighbors and friends as a young man, he did not have a relationship with God.
After serving time, Mickey began once again to “Master Life”! Trying to grow in faith and maintain the ways of the world, he found himself out of the will of God. An oxymoron in its own rite, for apart from God there can be no real life. Nevertheless, life began to take him back down the same road he once traveled. Waking up to this fact, he decided to get an education. The fear of failing was not as strong as the fear of never succeeding, giving him the desire once again to enroll in college.
Admitting that he had slipped through the cracks of our education, Mickey had never read one book through all of his high school years! It wasn’t until he had spent days in a 12 × 12 cell he began to read his first book but not without skipping a large portion of words he could not pronounce. That book inspired him to read even more and Mickey began to enjoy reading. However, writing his first book was still far from his mind. After five years in junior college and three associates degrees, Mickey finally accomplished what he thought would give him peace of mind. Yet it was God who would fulfill this need.
Through this whole process God was always second in Mickey’s life until one day he heard the voice of God. It was not an audible voice, though some may hear God in this way, for Mickey it was that still small voice. He recalls shopping at Wal-Mart one day to purchase a gift for a co-workers birthday. This person was very spiritual and Mickey wanted to buy them a Bible. As he reached out to grab a devotional Bible for his co-worker, God spoke to Mickey. It was the voice of God reminding Mickey of his promises to Him. You know, those promises, the empty ones we make to God so He will fix our broken lives. Like, “Lord, if you will help me get a better job so I can pay off my bills, then I will tithe”. Or, “if you can help me get through college then I’ll go to church”. The truth is we rarely fulfill these shallow promises.
It was in regards to these past promises that God had spoken to Mickey. God spoke to him and said, “I’m proud of you son”, a facetious remark, one to probe his conscience of all the broken promises he had made to God. God again said, “I remember you once saying”, “Lord, if I can only get my life together financially I’ll serve you”. Mickey had read every book and chapter in college to be the best he could be but he had never read the Bible! This is what God reminded Mickey of. It was at that very moment Mickey picked up another copy of the Bible and replied, “Lord, I’ll read this book and I will either serve you or I want”. This is all God has ever wanted form us, is to make the commitment to read His word and know the whole truth of who God is. Mickey did read that Bible from cover to cover. It caused a hunger in him that could not be quenched.
This hunger brought him into the very presence of God and into this revelation of being the literal bride of Christ. This is how Mickey gained the knowledge and revelation which he wrote in his book “You Are at The Time for Love”. I hope you will read the book and be driven by his experience to encounter God for yourself. May the Lord reveal Himself to all who are hungry. Ps. 63:1&2.
